Birds of Paradise

Many dreams we share my brothers
Many tears we dare not share
The sand of our life goes quickly blowing
To the heavens with our prayers
On the sea of time we travel
Each and every one who lives
May my journey end in greeting
The shores in which my brothers rest
La ilaha illa Allah
Every day and every night
La ilaha illa Allah
To paradise these birds take flight

More than seeking ease and riches
More than wanting is to give
We’re each a child unto each other
So treat and teach your children well
From the mountains soon to crumble
From the skies so full of pain
The oceans to the stars they wonder
Why we find it hard to say
La ilaha illa Allah
Every day and every night
La ilaha illa Allah
To paradise these words take flight

Yoriyos bukan penyanyi nasyid.

Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee (2007)

Beautiful World

It's a beautiful world we live in
A sweet romantic place
Beautiful people everywhere
The way they show they care
Makes me want to say
It's a beautiful world
Oh a beautiful world
For you

It's a wonderful time to be here
It's nice to be alive
Wonderful people everywhere
The way they comb their hair
Makes me want to say
It's a wonderful place
Oh what a wonderful place
For you, not me

Aku kenal lagu ini melalui album Renegades (2000), album terakhir Rage Against The Machine (RATM). Mungkin lagu paling ringkas RATM. Sebenarnya lagu ini adalah lagu cover. Lagu asal dinyanyikan oleh Devo dalam album New Traditionalists (1981).

Devo

Versi RATM kedengaran sedih dan sentimental. Namun, versi asal lagu ini sebenarnya kedengaran riang ria. Liriknya secara kasar menceritakan betapa indahnya dunia tetapi berakhir sebaliknya dengan ayat "for you, not me". Menurut Jerry Casale,

"We wanted to get everybody into a mood where people thought Devo was saying the world was really nice and saying the world was beautiful, then it turns out to be one man's opinion, which is mine, which is, while the world could be beautiful, it's not for me because of what I'm seeing." (from songfacts.com)

Kent State Massacre, 1970.

If A Tree Could Wander

Sejenak bersama puisi Rumi..

Oh, if a tree could wander

and move with foot and wings!

It would not suffer the axe blows

and not the pain of saws!

For would the sun not wander

away in every night ?

How could at ev'ry morning

the world be lighted up?

And if the ocean's water

would not rise to the sky,

How would the plants be quickened

by streams and gentle rain?

The drop that left its homeland,

the sea, and then returned ?

It found an oyster waiting

and grew into a pearl.

Did Yusaf not leave his father,

in grief and tears and despair?

Did he not, by such a journey,

gain kingdom and fortune wide?

Did not the Prophet travel

to far Medina, friend?

And there he found a new kingdom

and ruled a hundred lands.

You lack a foot to travel?

Then journey into yourself!

And like a mine of rubies

receive the sunbeams? print!

Out of yourself ? such a journey

will lead you to your self,

It leads to transformation

of dust into pure gold!
